AREA REVITALIZATION
To date, the Kelly Hotel has employed 43 individuals, creating convenient new opportunities for LMI residents in the immediate area surrounding downtown. The project is expected to create 50 additional jobs associated with the restaurant and retail components of the project. Rhaglan is partnering with a local job training program. These jobs are living wage with 50% of health care covered by the employer and free meals during days worked
ALIGNMENT WITH LOCAL REDEVELOPMENT PLANS
The Kelly is situated in a Federal Opportunity Zone (Low-Income and high poverty areas that are designated to spur private investment). Additionally, the City of Birmingham and REV Birmingham (an economic development organization) announced an action plan for the “Parkside District” in coordination with UAB, Children’s Hospital, and Alabama Power. This is an effort to produce a pedestrian friendly downtown and is being phased in by incorporating private sector development, installation of public improvements and efforts towards parking and safety.
